artist statement

My works are an outcome of repetition and reduction of the figure. Drawings are formed by the lines that hold my attention which are defined as they are revisited while others fall away.

From a young age I have been acutely aware of the body language of others, where tension is held, and how that vibrates from us. Through reducing the figure to the central lines I underscore our ability to read it both in form and feeling. Without clothing, setting, or complete depiction there is recognition.

Layers form as lines are revisited, figures are overlaid, and the surface repurposed. The final state is honest to this process and the materials used in their raw form. This has remained constant as my medium moves from paper to canvas to wood, from charcoal to paint to pencil, and back again.

memory

Today my work is a tool of reflection. Through self portraiture I portray memories held and felt through the body. As with line, the edges of memories are redefined through repeated visit and obscured through the traces of everything that followed.
